Why You Might Want a Snow Water Catchment Pond

Updated: Mar 13, 2024

A snow water catchment pond is a type of water storage system that collects snowmelt and rainwater. The water is then stored in the pond and can be used for a variety of purposes, such as irrigation, livestock watering or wild animal use depending on the type of permit you get for your pond.

Our property is on the slight hill just below a area that collects lots of snow. Each year all that water moved quickly over our property and down the valley not really stopping anywhere on our property in order to sink in.

There are many reasons why you might want to consider installing a snow water catchment pond on your property. Here are a few of the most common reasons:

  • Water conservation: though we have a well that gives us excellent, drinking water our snow water catchment pond will help us conserve water by providing a reliable source of water during dry periods for our animals, wild animals and land. This is especially important in areas that experience droughts or have low rainfall throughout the year as in our case.

  • Reduced reliance on municipal water: If you live in an area with high water rates, a snow water catchment pond can help you supplement your water needs with practically free water.

  • Improved water quality: Snow water is generally cleaner than rainwater, and it can help to improve the quality of the water that you use for drinking, cooking, and bathing if you also use rainwater.

If you are considering installing a snow water catchment pond, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. First, you need to make sure that you have the right amount of space for the pond. Second, you need to choose the right location for the pond. The pond should be located in an area that receives a lot of snow and rain. Finally, you need to make sure that you have the proper permits and approvals before you start construction.

Installing a snow water catchment pond is a great way to conserve water, reduce your water bills, and possibly improve your water quality. If you are considering this type of water storage system, be sure to do your research and talk to a qualified contractor to get started, or in our case, watch lots of YouTube videos and do it yourself.

Here are some additional benefits of having a snow water catchment pond:

  • Increased biodiversity: Snow water catchment ponds can provide a habitat for a variety of wildlife, such as fish, amphibians, and birds.

  • Reduced flooding: Snow water catchment ponds can help to reduce flooding by storing and slowing water during heavy rains and snowmelt.
